Best PC Games – How They Evolved

It’s a fact that many people head straight for their PC games after a stressful day at work and any one of the best PC games can help you unwind and give you the relaxation and fun you are looking for, right in the comfort of your home.

That is why we have so many PC games, both offline and online, making it to the market and catering for all groups of people.

For a toddler, the first contact with a PC normally happens through games and it has become a must to provide them with the best PC games appertaining to their development. So in this instance these games can actually act as a form of education and therefore have an important role to play in today’s technology inspired society.

But of course this has not always been the case…

How making the best PC games evolved:

The very first games introduced were video games.  Then with advances in technology, computer games came along. There has been a lot involved in the making of what are now recognised as some of the best PC games.

The very first game to be played on the computer was designed by Thomas T.Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann.  The game was a simple concept of shooting missiles, probably inspired by radar displays used during World War II.

Then in 1952, A.S.Douglas developed OXO, a graphic version of Tic-tac-toe.

There have been a lot of historical evolvements in bringing about the best PC games today.

In the 1960s games were programmed in Universities in the United States by individuals, just for the sake of killing time.  There were only a few though, and easily forgotten over time.

In 1961, a group of MIT students programmed a game called Space War.  This was the first game to be circulated among DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) computers and was widely available for one and all.   Kren Thompson, one of the developers of Multics, had a plan of playing a game, space travel, for which he needed an Operating system.  The game’s development led to the invention of UNIX though!

While developers tried to get the best platform for their games, competition developed to bring out the best PC games.

In 1971, Don Daglow developed the first baseball game to be played on a computer.

Star Trek was also developed in the same year by Mike Mayfield at the MIT.  It had the advantage of being portable across hardware platforms by students.

In 1972, Gregory Yob wrote Hunt the Wumpus, a hide and seek game for the PDP-10.

Maze War and Spasm were developed in1974 and they were pioneers in the #D first person shooter games.

Will Crowther created Adventure in1975, in FORTRAN and it was later re-created in Plato.

In 1975, the concept of ‘graphics’ came into being due to CRT screens with 30-40 lines being printed on the screen  in a few seconds. The first game to use line of sight graphics was the game Dungeon, developed by Daglow, who made it a role playing game on PDP -10.

Another game, RPG dnd, similar to Dungeons and Dragons was made in the Plato platform around the same time.

Some of the Best PC games include a category of first person shooter and combat.  The first game of this type was Air, a game developed by Kelton Flinn and John Taylor .  This was later updated to a multi- player, graphical game, Air Warrior.  This was an attempt to create a 3D environment in ASCII format.

Striving hard towards making the best PC games, the 70s was a decade of long strides in game development.

In 1977, the writing of Zork commenced and this was the first game which lapped up the potential of playing on a personal computer.

In 1980, Rogue was released, again for personal computers, using dungeon maps and rogue like creatures who appeared in every game.  This game, which  was developed by Michael Toy, Glenn Wichman and Ken Arnold,  marked the beginning of home computer games.

In the same year, another game Mystery House, created by Roberta William, made it to the markets.

In 1982, the Commodore 64 was released.  It had a BASIC programming environment with advanced graphic and sound capabilities.

In 1983, Snipes was created by Superset software, to test a new PC based computer network.

The year 1984 saw the modern adventure game in Sierra King’s quest series.  It had a third person perspective and colour graphics.

In all these games, commands were entered as text.  This changed with the SCUMM system of point and click, built into Maniac Mansion.  In short this started the era of the mouse!

1984 saw the introduction of Elite, a modern style graphical game developed by David Braben and Ian Bell.

Slowly the Programmers and the Gamers started to advance and they have not looked back since.  And now that computers are commonplace in households, games have become a basic necessity.

The 1990s is where internet gaming evolved.  Id software’s Quake was the first game to be played online as a first person shooting game.   Other games began to make it to the markets online over a variety of categories.  Some examples of these were Age of Empires, War Craft, Star Craft, Heroes of Might and Magic.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games, popularly known as MMORPGs started evolving, to help gamers to play with a number of simultaneous players.

Best PC Games awards:

Over the years gaming has evolved to such extent that the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) has been set up to award the best PC games for every year.

The Best PC games are judged and awarded with respect to their industry, designers, producers and their peers.   For instance, The AIAS awarded the best PC game of the year 2004 for Half-Life 2 and for the year 2005, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. (Incidentally Half-Life is included in our list of Best PC Games of All Time).

It has sub categories like Computer Children’s Game of the Year, Computer Family Game of the Year, Computer Role Playing Game of the Year, Computer Sports Game of the Year and so on.  This has given gaming a new perspective and producers and developers are intent on competing against each other to develop the best Pc games ever!
